Curating Thomas Becket: murder and the making of a saint

This lecture will explore the forthcoming major British Museum exhibition Thomas Becket: murder and the making of a saint. Originally scheduled to coincide with the 850th anniversary of Becket’s martyrdom in December 2020, the exhibition was postponed until 2021, and will now open in May. Presented by curator Lloyd de Beer this lecture will cover the themes of the exhibition including several star loans and the challenges of curating in the age of Covid.

Lecturer

Dr Lloyd de Beer is the Ferguson curator of medieval Europe at the British Museum. He is an expert on medieval sculpture but his interests are broad. Recent publications include articles on English alabasters in Denmark, the St Stephen’s wall paintings from Westminster Palace, and an edited volume on seals and their status in the Middle Ages. He is currently working on a monograph: English Medieval Alabaster Sculpture: Imagery, Trade, Iconoclasm, Reuse.
