An opportunity for a private visit to another Historic Houses venue for a closer and more detailed look at the historic room design and unique artworks collection including the wonderful Flemish tapestry collection. Discover the remnants of a medieval monastery and the courtyards of an opulent Tudor mansion. Charterhouse has been living the nation’s history since 1348 and has many treasures to view, one being the Tudor Great Chamber which is from the 1540s including portraits by Lely and Kneller. The chamber is the only one to survive in London and remains the jewel in the crown of this ancient historic site on the edge of the City. It was where Elizabeth I met her Privy Council in 1558 in the days before her coronation, and James I created 130 knights.
Our tour will last around 75 minutes.
You may choose to visit the museum before, or after, the tour. It is open from 10.30 until 16.30 and takes a look at the daily life of the Brothers (residents), the school and the origins of the charitable foundation established by Thomas Sutton in 1611, as well as the Tudor and medieval periods of the Charterhouse. There are 120 objects on display including 35 loans from Charterhouse School, London Museum and the V&A.
