-
Thursday 26 March 2026
(6.15pm for 6.30pm start-9pm) - College of Arms, 130 Queen Victoria Street, London EC4V 4BT
- Guide: Adam Tuck
This study visit has been arranged to supplement the 11 February 2026 study day on The History and Art of Heraldry, also led by Adam Tuck, Lancaster Herald. It is however a separate event and must be booked separately.
The College of Arms, incorporated in 1484, is the official heraldic authority for England, Wales, Northern Ireland and much of the Commonwealth including Australia and New Zealand. As well as being responsible for the granting of new coats of arms, the College maintains registers of arms, pedigrees, genealogies, Royal Licences, changes of name, and flags. Since its re-incorporation in 1555, the college has consisted of thirteen officers of arms, styled ‘heralds in ordinary’. The heralds, besides having ceremonial duties, advise on all matters relating to the peerage and baronetage, precedence, honours and ceremonial as well as national and community symbols including flags.
The timetable for the evening will be as follows:
6.15 for 6.30pm: Arrival
6.30-7.15pm: Talk in the main hall on the history of the College and the heralds’ practices
7.15-8.15pm: Viewing in the Record Room showing a selection of College records and other manuscripts dating back to 1484
8.15pm: Drinks in main hall
9pm: Departure
