This lecture will explore the forthcoming major British Museum exhibition Thomas Becket: murder and the making of a saint. Originally scheduled to coincide with the 850th anniversary of Becket’s martyrdom in December 2020, the exhibition was postponed until 2021, and will now open in May. Presented by curator Lloyd de Beer this lecture will cover the themes of the exhibition including several star loans and the challenges of curating in the age of Covid.
Lecturer
Dr Lloyd de Beer is a curator at the British Museum where he has specific responsibility for the late medieval European collections. BA, MA and PhD (2018) at the University of East Anglia. He is currently focusing on the museum’s collection of English alabaster sculpture, the context for their production and their fate after the English Reformation. Lloyd is interested in the early collecting history of medieval antiquities, specifically the culture and context which resulted in the formation of a national collection at the British Museum.
