Visit to St George’s Chapel and Archives Windsor
-
Friday 24 April 2026
(2pm for 2.20pm start) - St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, Windsor, SL4 1NJ.
- Lecturer/Guide: St George’s Staff and Volunteers
St George’s Chapel was founded in 1348 by Edward III and has nearly 700 years’ history of community life, prayer and worship. The Chapel is also the spiritual home of the Order of the Garter and the burial place of eleven former Sovereigns of England and Great Britain. The building, begun in 1475 and completed in 1528, is one of the finest examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture and was remarkably little affected by the Reformation or the Civil War and Commonwealth.
The Archives and Chapter Library is home to the Chapel’s collection of documents and books. The Archives contains evidence of the Chapel’s history, ranging from twelfth-century manuscripts to modern day spreadsheets. The Library houses rare books dating between the 1400s and 1700s, including some of the earliest examples of English printing.
We will be divided into groups of no more than 10/12
Our tour will finish at approx. 4.45 pm. There will be a Choral Evensong in St George’s Chapel at 5.15 pm. Visitors are welcome.
This tour will not entitle you to visit other parts of the Castle. (If you wished, you could do this independently in the morning)
