William Morris Society
William Morris lived here from 1878 until his death in 1896. Displays from the collection include wallpaper, watercolour designs and a selection of textiles. William Morris was a revolutionary force in Victorian Britain: his work as an artist, designer, craftsman, writer and socialist dramatically changed the fashions and ideologies of the era. He would become one of the most significant figures in the Arts and Crafts Movement, a man of far ranging creativity and knowledge.
Emery Walker House
Emery Walker House is ‘believed to be the most authentic Arts and Crafts home in Britain’ with original William Morris wallpaper, arts and crafts furniture and textiles and artefacts from the period. Emery Walker was a friend of William Morris and he had links with The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and the Society of Antiquaries. His firm specialised in cutting edge techniques for reproducing works of art and photographs as book illustrations and helped to revolutionise the book making industry.
