Members’ Letter October 2025

Dear Members

We hope this message finds you well and continuing to enjoy the rich programme of lectures, study days, visits and courses that the London Art History Society is proud to offer. We are delighted to share details of our fascinating Autumn and Winter programme. Please do have a look at our upcoming events page. Events still available for booking include:

In addition, we have a date for your diaries – a visit to V&A East has been arranged for Monday 19th January 2026. We hope to have the full details soon, so please keep an eye on the website.

The Society’s Annual General Meeting this year will be held on Wednesday 26 November at The Art Workers’ Guild at 5pm and will be followed at 6pm by the John McNeill Memorial Lecture, which will be delivered by his close friend and collaborator, Richard Plant, on The Romsey Rood: An Anglo-Saxon artefact in the Anglo-Norman World. We hope you will be able to join us for refreshments afterwards which provides an opportunity to talk to other members. Booking is essential. A joint ticket will be issued for the AGM and lecture. Your AGM papers can be found here. Please note that the Report and Accounts are still in draft form. A final version will be uploaded as soon as they are available

We kindly encourage members to book events as soon as possible so that we can be sure that we have sufficient participants to make events financially viable to run. This quarter’s programme offers a wide range of topics and speakers, and we hope that there will be something in it for everyone to enjoy.

A message from our Treasurer Sue Preston, our Membership Secretary Ethan Chapman-Ames and our Administrative Assistant Judith Burt

We continue to receive many double bookings and payments for which no booking/order has been received. Here are a few tips and reminders to help make life easier for us all and avoid payments being lost.

When booking for an event:

  • Please ensure that you complete the booking/order process by selecting “CONFIRM PAYMENT”. When you have done so:
      • Please check that you receive a confirmation of booking email within 24 hours of making the booking. If no e-mail is received, it is likely that you have not made the booking and your order has not gone through.
      • It is also possible to check your bookings by logging into your London Art History Account on WebCollect and selecting the “My Home” page/link. This has sections showing “My Tickets for upcoming events” and “My Recent orders.” If you have a joint membership, please check the home page for both members.
  • If you have chosen to pay by bank transfer or cheque, please don’t forget to make the payment or send the cheque.  If payment is not received your booking is likely to be cancelled.

When renewing your membership:

  • If you are an existing member and wish to renew your membership, please log into your WebCollect account, select “Manage / Renew my Subscriptions” option on your Home page and complete the steps to order your renewal.
      • You can also check your renewal date in this section.
      • Payments sent to us without a corresponding order will run the risk of being missed and your renewal will not take place.
  • Please remember that if you use the “Direct Debit” method of payment through WebCollect, this is different from standard direct debit systems. It is not an automatic recurring payment. You must order and “purchase” your Membership each year.

Event Team Volunteer Opportunity

Last but not least, we would like to reach out to invite enthusiastic and committed members to volunteer for our Events Team. This team plays a vital role in planning, organising, and delivering the wide range of events that lie at the heart of our Society’s activities. If you’re interested in joining the team or would like to learn more about what’s involved, please contact our Chair, Jeanette McCauley or Courses Coordinator, Peter Bryden.

Best Wishes,

Megan Williams
